WHAT IS BIOBABES?

BioBabes is an international collective of biodesigners, makers, and biohackers started in 2015 at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia by
Thora Arnardottir, Jessica Dias, Noor El-Gewely, Ingried Ramirez,
and Maryanne Ewais.

Initially formed to explore emerging potentials in biodesign, BioBabes has evolved into a shared platform for design-led biological research and creative experimentation. Today, the work continues through Unruly Matters LTD (led by Thora) and Formalised Curiosities LTD (led by Jessica), with both operating independently across academic, industry, and public spheres while remaining aligned through a common vision.

Together, we champion a cross-disciplinary approach to biofabrication and living systems, engaging with students, institutions, and industry partners to shape responsible, imaginative biodesign futures. Our goal remains to foster broader access to biofabrication, and to develop viable, industry-ready biobased materials and applications.
